I hear people ask the question, “What is your dream for your life?” I always have difficulty answering because I don’t have one big dream. Some people would say they want to be a movie star or own several restaurants. Not me; I have several dreams like dots on a page or stars in the sky, and once connected, they reveal my dream for my life. Kind of like a dream is my life’s journey. I’m unsure how to articulate how I see and feel it, but it’s there. I don’t have one significant overarching accomplishment that I’d feel as if my life is complete once I reach. Instead, there are milestones that I would get and collect. Each stone collected could be put together to build what would ultimately be my life’s dream. Better? Lol!

Anyways, the other day I came across an Instagram post from Issa Rae, and it was a picture of a tweet from about a decade prior that read, “When I grow up, I want to be a more successful version of me.” It was so powerful to see her words manifest themselves into the person she is today. It also serves as evidence that her success did not happen overnight. The Bible does say to write down the vision and make it plain, so I thought I would give it a go. In doing so, I had to allow myself time to think precisely about what I want for my life and be especially careful in not making the error of taking on what I’ve seen on IG in other people’s lives and feeds as my dream. I wanted the dream to be solely mine, uninfluenced. So I sat and thought for some time. Then, in Notes on my iPhone, in no particular order, I wrote:

I Will…

Deepen my relationship with and be in total alignment with God

Raise my son to be a good, assertive, financially independent, and God-fearing person

Develop solid friendships that are rooted in trust, honesty, love, and similar interests

Own a gorgeous home with the design aesthetic of my dreams to serve as a space for joy, peace, love, and creativity

Have a successful writing/blogging career where I travel to beautiful places and meet beautiful people

Secure generational wealth

Become a world-traveling philanthropist

Forgive me and love me…fully

My mini dreams/dots/stars/milestones are not concrete. They could change at any time—typical me. I wouldn’t say I like to box myself in. Meeting new people and having new experiences can inspire new dreams, so I want to remain open. I want to know; What is your dream for your life?

With love,

S.

“Write my answer plainly on tablets so that a runner can carry the correct message to others. The vision is for a future time. It describes the end, and it will be fulfilled. If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently, for it will surely take place. It will not be delayed.” ~ Habakkuk 2:2-3 (NLT)
